Basics Step to Jump Start a Car

At some point, you may have to jump-start a car. Be sure to read the owner’s manual before attempting it. If done incorrectly, it could cause severe damage to your vehicle.

To begin, make sure both cars are in park with the emergency brake set. Open the hood and locate the positive terminal of the dead battery. It is usually red or marked with a plus sign. The jumper cables should be marked or colored, so you know to clamp the red to the positive and the black to the negative terminal.
  • Clamp the positive cable to the dead positive terminal.
  • Clamp the other positive cable to the good batteries positive terminal.
  • Clamp the negative to the negative terminal on the good battery.
  • Finally, clamp the negative to the dead battery negative terminal.
Run the live vehicle for several minutes then start the dead car. After any jump start, you should have your motor inspected. Contact our service department at Kia of Waldorf to make an appointment anytime you have your car jumped.
